Conservative chief Merz on track to become next German chancellor

German voters are voting on Sunday with the conservatives as the strong favourites after an intense campaign underscored by a far-right surge, bolstered by Donald Trump's presidency in the US, and amid voter concerns about economic stagnation, immigration, and European security.
