The AI Boom and the Dot-Com Déjà Vu

Some compare today’s AI boom to the Dot-Com phenomenon of the early 2000s. They may be right, in many ways, it feels familiar.

Back then, the internet was the new frontier. Startups appeared overnight with big dreams and even bigger valuations. “Revolutionizing everything” was a common promise. But when the bubble burst, many of those companies vanished. Pets.com, Webvan, and eToys became case studies in overhype and underplanning.

Still, the story didn’t end with the crash. Out of that chaos came the foundations of today’s digital world. Companies like Amazon, Google, and eBay not only survived, they redefined global business. Two decades later, the U.S. market is dominated by technology giants born in that same era of frenzy and failure.

So, if the AI boom feels like the Dot-Com bubble, maybe that’s not a bad thing. Yes, many AI startups may fade, and some wild promises will collapse under reality. But the long-term story might rhyme with history, the survivors of today’s AI gold rush could be the tech giants of tomorrow.
