US President Donald Trump does not intend to talk to Elon Musk after their feud erupted on social media, the White House has said.

The confirmation came after reports the pair would speak on the phone later on Friday.

The rift between the president and his former adviser reached breaking point on Thursday after both exchanged insults, mostly on social media.

It appeared to have started with Trump saying he was "disappointed" with Musk's criticisms of his spending bill.
