Explainer : Strait of Hormuz tensions raise global oil security fears

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but crucial waterway just 33 kilometers wide at its tightest point, remains one of the world’s most strategic oil transit routes. Around 20 percent of the global oil supply flows through it. But with rising diplomatic tensions in the region, Iran has at times threatened to disrupt shipping, sparking fears over global energy security.
