UK enters second heatwave of year - as Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece swelter in 40C heat

The UK has entered its second official heatwave of the year after temperatures topped 31C in southern England.

Britain is halfway through a four-day amber heat health alert, with temperatures expected to peak in the mid-30s on Tuesday - and weather experts are warning that sweltering temperatures like these are set to become more frequent in the coming years due to global warming.

A ridge of high pressure is also driving temperatures above 40C in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece, with Spain's meteorological service predicting that June will be the hottest the country has seen since records began.
