Iran demands guarantees against US attacks for nuclear talks: Analysis

Ali Akbar Darieni, a researcher at the Tehran-based Centre for Strategic Studies, told Al Jazeera that Iran remains deeply sceptical of US intentions despite talk of renewed negotiations. He said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed President Trump's claim that talks could begin within days, stressing Iran would only re-engage if assured there would be no further military attacks. While Araghchi insisted diplomacy remains possible, Darieni said past US behaviour makes any guarantees hard to trust.
He argued that Iran’s response to recent Israeli and US strikes—particularly missile attacks on cities like Haifa and Tel Aviv—forced Israel to seek a ceasefire. Darieni also claimed Iran’s strengthened air defences and growing missile capabilities show it has emerged stronger from the conflict. He criticised efforts by Israel and the US to destabilise Iran internally, saying recent sabotage plots had been foiled. As long as regime change remains a Western goal, he added, meaningful dialogue is unlikely.
