Wildfires rage across Greece and Turkiye as Mediterranean heatwave intensifies
Wildfires fuelled by gale-force winds and dry conditions are sweeping across parts of Greece and Turkiye, forcing evacuations and causing widespread damage.
On the Greek island of Crete, a massive blaze near Ierapetra has engulfed forests and olive groves, with 230 firefighters, numerous fire engines, and water-dropping aircraft battling to contain the flames.
In Turkiye's Izmir province, ongoing fires have displaced approximately 50,000 people and claimed the life of an elderly man due to smoke inhalation.
The intensifying frequency and severity of these Mediterranean wildfires highlight the growing impact of climate change on the region, posing significant threats to local communities, agriculture, and the vital tourism industry.
