Former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari dies after prolonged illness in London, aged 82

Nigeria's former president, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82 in London, where he had been receiving medical treatment. Buhari's presidency, which began in 2015, was marked by his promise to crack down on corruption and his efforts to combat the Boko Haram insurgency in the country's north. Despite some successes, including weakening Boko Haram and freeing many hostages, his tenure was also criticised for slow reforms and unresolved domestic issues such as unemployment and rising insecurity.
Buhari's legacy remains complex, with supporters praising him as an honest politician in a country known for corruption, whilst critics accused him of nepotism and authoritarianism. His frequent medical trips abroad highlighted the inadequacies of Nigeria's healthcare system and raised concerns about his ability to govern. Buhari's death marks the end of a controversial political career that spanned decades and included both military rule and democratic leadership.
