Pakistan's Punjab battles severe floods as monsoon intensifies
Heavy rains in Pakistan’s Punjab province have triggered deadly floods, killing at least 63 people in 24 hours and bringing the three-week death toll to 180, with over 500 injured. The downpour has destroyed hundreds of homes and overwhelmed dams, particularly in Chakwal district, where 400mm of rain fell in just 10 hours, submerging farmland and forcing military-led evacuations. Similar devastation has struck Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern regions as the monsoon batters the country. Pakistan, no stranger to catastrophic floods, faces warnings of worsening extreme weather in the coming years.
Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder reports from Chakwal District in Punjab, where the rain is destroying dams and causing rivers to burst their banks.
