Starvation killing Gaza’s population as civil defence spokesman calls for global action

In an Al Jazeera interview, Gaza Civil Defence spokesman Mahmoud Basal described catastrophic conditions in Gaza, where Israel's "systematic starvation policy" has killed over 1,000 civilians seeking aid since March, including 85 children.
He revealed his own family survives on lentils, with daughter Malik pleading "we have nothing at home", while son Mahmoud cries constantly from hunger.
Basal, announcing his personal hunger strike, condemned Israel for weaponising aid distribution - where desperate civilians risk being "carried back in body bags".
He emphasised Gaza's famine extends beyond food queues, with thousands starving silently in tents, as children die daily from malnutrition.
The spokesman appealed for global action, urging parliaments, activists and religious leaders to pressure Israel to end this "genocide by starvation", where even doctors cannot treat emaciated patients.
Basal stressed Palestinians seek only unrestricted humanitarian access to survive, as Israel deliberately blocks flour, bread and medical supplies.
His emotional testimony highlighted mothers' inability to soothe hungry children, with nights filled with cries of starving infants - a reality he called "beyond description". Basal concluded with a warning that Gaza's entire population now faces imminent famine without urgent international intervention.
