Macron says France will recognise Palestinian state
French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will recognise the State of Palestine in September at the UN General Assembly. “The urgent need today is for the war in Gaza to end and to rescue the civilian population,” Macron wrote in a post on X. “Peace is possible. We need an immediate ceasefire, the release of all the captives, and massive humanitarian aid to the population of Gaza.”
Al Jazeera's Hamdah Salhut joins live from Amman. She's there because the Israeli government has banned Al Jazeera from reporting inside Israel and in the occupied West Bank.
Meanwhile, the setback in ceasefire negotiations prompted hundreds of Israeli protestors to gather on the streets of Tel Aviv. They're calling on the government to end its war in Gaza and to immediately strike a deal with Hamas to release the remaining captives. Many say they are concerned about the conditions in which they are being held.
