Macron's new stance on Palestine echoes Marie Antoinette’s 'let them eat cake': Marwan Bishara

Al Jazeera’s Senior Political Analyst Marwan Bishara criticised the Trump administration’s inconsistent stance on Gaza’s starvation, noting its lack of coherent policy and reliance on Netanyahu’s actions.
He highlighted the irony of Saudi Arabia appealing to Trump for peace efforts while the US boycotts UN talks on Palestinian statehood, calling it a sign of Arab states’ impotence against Israeli aggression. Bishara dismissed Macron’s symbolic recognition of Palestine as inadequate amid ongoing genocide, comparing it to Marie Antoinette’s infamous “let them eat cake”.
He argued that decades of failed two-state rhetoric ignore reality: Israeli settlements have rendered Palestinian sovereignty impossible, reducing the West Bank to “Swiss cheese”.
With Gaza destroyed and the West Bank annexed, Bishara condemned global leaders for repeating empty mantras while enabling Israel’s colonial expansion.
He concluded that without urgent action, the two-state solution is now a “pipe dream” masking genocide.
