Canada says it intends to recognise a Palestinian state in September
Canada intends to recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations in September, Prime Minister Mark Carney says. Carney told reporters the planned move was predicated on the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to reforms, including commitments to fundamentally reform its governance and to hold general elections in 2026 in which Hamas can play no part. “Canada has a belief in the alienable rights of the two peoples,” he said, noting Israel’s attacks and statements on taking over Gaza and the occupied West Bank led to the decision. He said he talked to PA President Mahmoud Abbas over the phone about the move. “It relies upon the representations of the Palestinian Authority,” Carney said.
