US President Donald Trump has threatened India with an "unspecified penalty" over its military and trade ties with Russia, as part of his push for a ceasefire in Ukraine.

The sanctions would be in addition to the 25% tariffs announced by the president this week, which are due to come into effect on 1 August.

India is the largest importer of Russian arms worldwide, which make up more than half its military equipment.

Russia is also India's top oil supplier, accounting for 35% of overall supplies in 2025.
