Latvia's president says Europe should 'absolutely' introduce conscription

The Latvian president, Edgars Rinkevics, has urged European countries to "absolutely" introduce conscription, as he conceded the continent was "quite weak" militarily.

He says there have been "ups and downs" in terms of relations with America but says that European countries need to increase defence spending as "a lot of people are a little bit nervous".

Latvia introduced conscription for men in 2023 and has pushed defence spending to 4% of the country's GDP. Mr Rinkevics says "seeing what is happening in the world, many other European countries need to follow that".
