Ukraine peace talks: Trump sits down with European leaders at the White House

Speaking to the public alongside European leaders, the US president said it was an “honour” to convene with them at the White House, stressing that they were united in their goal of ending the war.
“We’ve had a very successful day so far, with important discussions as we work to end the killing and stop the war in Ukraine,” Trump said.
“We’re all working towards the same goal. A very simple goal: we want to stop the killing and get this settled,” he added.
At the NATO summit, Trump softened his tone towards European leaders, offering effusive praise after years of strained relations. He described NATO chief Rutte as a "great gentleman," called the UK prime minister a "friend," and said he liked France’s Macron "even more now." Italy’s Meloni was hailed as an "inspiration," while Finland’s president was complimented on his appearance. The warmest moment came with Germany’s chancellor, whom Trump jokingly asked about his "great" tan—a stark contrast to earlier tensions over trade and security. The remarks signalled a strategic pivot to diplomacy following his previous criticisms.
