Gaza's traumatised children 'profoundly impacted' by war and starvation, aid doctor says
Dr Gwenno Jones, senior case manager with Children Not Numbers, told Al Jazeera that children in Gaza are enduring severe trauma, with many having lost one or both parents. She said hunger, heat and famine are causing children to faint at school, while the psychological toll of losing family and homes leaves them deeply insecure.
Despite this, the organisation runs a school for 380 children in southern Gaza, offering a rare sense of normality and hope. They also provide orphan support, food, shelter, medical care and psychological aid.
Jones stressed that hope is hard to sustain under Israel’s blockade, but small gestures like caseworkers’ daily contact and school activities help.
She praised local staff in Gaza, who despite their own starvation, grief and loss, continue working tirelessly for the children, calling them “true heroes.”
