‘One genocide doesn't justify another’: German public turns on Israel arms sales over Gaza

Germany faces growing public and political dissent over its military support for Israel, its second-largest arms client.
A recent poll shows only 31% of Germans still believe in a historic responsibility to back Israel, down from 62% who now oppose it.
This shift follows 22 months of war in Gaza, with critics arguing Germany ignored explicit Israeli government rhetoric about displacing Gazans.
While a partial ban on some tank parts was announced, the left-wing party dismisses it as insufficient, noting that major weapons systems are unaffected.
A former ambassador and colleagues have pleaded for earlier and stronger pressure on Israel, stating that historic guilt does not justify supporting a genocide.
