Syrian Alawite families flee to Lebanon, fearing violence and exclusion under new authorities
Thousands of Syrians continue to flee to Lebanon, escaping the aftermath of over 14 years of civil war. The latest refugees, mainly from the Alawite minority, say they are being targeted and fear revealing their identities. They describe feeling terrorised under the new power balance in Syria, which shifted away from the Assad regime. Despite assurances of investigations into recent violence, many displaced people feel they have no future in Syria under the new authorities. Some have already lost loved ones and homes to the conflict. The situation in the coastal regions has worsened, undermining efforts for a peaceful transition. While calls for unity are made, some communities feel excluded from the new Syria.
Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reports from Akkar, in northern Lebanon.
