McMansions first appeared in American suburbs in the 1980s but have continued to grow larger and more eclectic as Americans seek bigger homes filled with amenities.

These types of homes are often known to have been built with cheap materials and a poor design. Yet, Americans continue to buy them. CNBC looked into the why.
