Earthquake in Afghanistan: Mountainous villages cut off by landslides | DW News

At least 1,400 people have been killed in an earthquake in Afghanistan - and more than 3,000 are injured. Officials say the magnitude Six quake struck the mountainous region near the city of Jalalabad. Rescuers are struggling to reach remote areas due to rough terrain and hostile weather. Entire villages have been destroyed and it's feared the death toll could rise sharply with many people trapped under the rubble.

Juma Khan Nael is from the Afghan Red Crescent Society in Kabul, an organization which is affiliated with the Taliban government. He told DW more about the challenges involved in the rescue and relief efforts in Afghanistan.

The Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) is connected to the Taliban. Its leadership was appointed by the Taliban government and the organization is described as a Taliban-controlled aid agency. While the ARCS operates as part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and states it delivers impartial humanitarian services, its current leadership is appointed by the de facto Taliban authorities.
