Polish couple spared from suspected Russian drone strike
Pensioner Tomasz Wesolowski was lucky to escape when a drone crashed into his house while he was watching the news on television about Russian drones flying into Polish airspace.
Wesolowski was downstairs when the drone struck the upper part of his home in the morning, destroying the roof, damaging a bedroom and scattering debris across the garden.
"I turned on the TV, and all the news was about this massive drone flight, and after a while, I heard a plane flying over ... and suddenly something boomed," he told Reuters in the eastern Polish village of Wyryki-Wola.
Poland shot down suspected Russian drones in its airspace on Wednesday with the backing of aircraft from its NATO allies, the first time a member of the Western military alliance is known to have fired shots during Russia's war in Ukraine.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told parliament it was "the closest we have been to open conflict since World War Two," although he also said he had "no reason to believe we're on the brink of war."
