US officials in Israel to keep Netanyahu on board with Gaza deal : Analysis

Kenneth Katzman, a political analyst at The Soufan Center, says the goal of the senior US officials visiting Israel this week is to persuade the Israeli prime minister to “trust the Trump team” to implement the Gaza ceasefire plan. “I think JD Vance’s mission and the Trump team’s mission was to lower the temperature, get Netanyahu to stand down and give them a chance,” Katzman told Al Jazeera.

But Katzman said despite positivity expressed by Vance and other US officials, he doesn’t think the truce agreement will succeed because Hamas is unlikely to disarm as Washington has demanded. “I really see no evidence that Hamas is going to abide by the rest of the plan,” he said. Trump has stressed Hamas must disarm, but the Palestinian group has linked giving up its weapons to the establishment of a Palestinian state.
