Officials estimate that tens of thousands of tonnes of explosives remain buried or scattered across the enclave.
These remnants include landmines, mortar shells and large aerial bombs capable of levelling concrete buildings.
Efforts to remove the explosives could take years and require millions of dollars.
For families returning home, every step through the rubble carries the risk of another explosion.
