UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is calling for an immediate end to what he calls a 'nightmare of violence'. Just over a week ago, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces - or the RSF - seized the besieged city of El Fasher from Sudanese army forces. It's a major turning point in the war - cementing RSF control of the western Darfur region. Since then, terrible reports have come from El-Fasher, where the RSF is accused of mass killings and other atrocities. The war started in April 2023. But the conflict isn't just local -- several other countries are involved and influencing what happens.
