‘Am I going to die here?’: The plight of African migrants forced to work in Myanmar scam centres
The border between Myanmar and Thailand has become a hotspot for scam centers - places where workers, often victims of human trafficking, were forced to scam people online. With a civil war raging in Myanmar, the political instability had left a vacuum for this type of criminal activity to flourish. In recent months, under international pressure, rebel groups in Myanmar have started to crack down. Many scam centers are being closed and the victims freed. But for around 300 African nationals mainly from Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda their ordeal is not over. Stranded without their passports, they have been struggling to return home.
