Eid under fire: Ukraine’s Crimean Tatars pray for peace and return
Muslim worshippers in Ukraine mark Eid under the shadow of war, gathering in Kyiv amid ongoing conflict. The community, predominantly Crimean Tatars with a history of Soviet persecution and Russian annexation, stands united with fellow Ukrainians in defence of their homeland. Soldiers and civilians find solace in faith, their shared struggle transcending religious boundaries. Many view the war as another chapter in their centuries-long resistance against Russian domination. While the fighting continues, the Eid celebrations offer temporary respite and hope for peace. The community maintains its distinct cultural identity while firmly asserting its Ukrainian allegiance. Their story reflects both the human cost of war and the resilience of indigenous communities in conflict zones.
