Flights cancelled, protests erupt as general strike hits Belgium over austerity cuts
Belgium was brought to a standstill by a massive general strike as workers rallied against harsh austerity measures, including pension cuts and extended retirement ages. The protests caused widespread disruption, grounding flights at Brussels Airport, halting public transport, and crippling essential services. Trade unions led the outcry, condemning the government's focus on defence spending while slashing social benefits and unemployment support. Empty departure halls and deserted streets underscored the strike's impact, with airport staff and artists alike warning of unsustainable working conditions. Demonstrators demanded fair wages and taxes on the wealthy, arguing the reforms punished ordinary citizens. The largest labour action since 2019, the strike signalled growing unrest over rising living costs and eroding workers' rights. Belgium's transport chaos mirrored the public's fury at policies perceived as favouring militarisation over welfare.
