Myanmar quake death toll could rise significantly as time runs out to find survivors | DW News

In Myanmar, search and rescue efforts for victims of Friday's 7.7 magnitude earthquake continued on Monday.

The death toll has continued to rise with local officials confirming 2,056 deaths, over 3,900 injured and more than 270 still missing.

With communications severely disrupted, the true scale of the disaster remains unclear and it is feared the death could rise significantly.

DW spoke to Bianca Drogosch, the deputy head of mission at Germany's embassy in Yangon, for the latest on the situation and the aid efforts.

Marie Manrique the programme coordinator for Myanmar for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies joined us from Yangon as well.

She said there was still a small, narrowing window to still find survivors alive, even as aftershocks continued to hit.

Neighbouring Thailand was also affected by the quake, with an underconstruction skyscraper in the capital Bangkok collapsing.

At least 19 people are believed to have died there, with rescuers still searching the rubble.

DW's Tommy Walker joined us from the scene. He told us that Thai authorities were investigating irregularities in the building's construction.
