South Sudan rejects AU meeting with Riek Machar, raising regional concerns

South Sudan’s government has refused a request by the African Union’s Panel of the Wise to meet with Vice President Riek Machar, who is currently under house arrest. The delegation is in Juba to address the rising violence and political instability across the country. The United Nations, African Union, and regional leaders have condemned the decision, warning that Machar’s continued detention could destabilize the fragile peace agreement in the world’s youngest nation.
