Argentina’s budget cuts halt housing projects, leaving residents uncertain amid rising poverty
Housing projects in some of Buenos Aires’ poorest areas remain unfinished due to government budget cuts. Argentina's president is pressing ahead with plans to deregulate and reduce the size of his government. Since taking office in December 2023, he has halved the number of ministries and cut 10% of public sector jobs. Many developments relied on a now-dissolved housing unit, leaving residents uncertain about access to basic services. Infrastructure projects, including sewage and water facilities, have been put on hold. Nearly 12% of Argentina’s population lacks access to essential services, with poverty widespread. Labour unions warn of job losses following the closure of the housing secretariat. The government cites corruption but has yet to present a clear plan to address housing shortages.
