EU offers zero tariff deal to US but prepares for trade war
The EU has proposed a “zero-for-zero” tariff deal with the US to eliminate duties on industrial goods.
This comes as a bid to ease tensions after Washington imposed tariffs on EU steel, aluminium, and cars.
The EU is also preparing retaliatory tariffs starting April 15, targeting selected US products.
Brussels is considering $28bn in countermeasures, matching the scale of harm from US duties.
A second wave of tariffs is planned for May 15 if no resolution is reached.
Some EU states, like Ireland, are urging caution to avoid escalation.
President Trump has threatened further tariffs, including 200% duties on EU alcohol.
