‘Day of Separation’: Exhibit honours Palestinians killed under Israel’s occupation
Palestinian-Dutch photographer Sakir Khader’s exhibition Yawm al-Firak, or Day of Separation, at Amsterdam’s FOAM museum documents the lives and deaths of Palestinians from the occupied West Bank and Gaza, killed by the Israeli army. Through intimate portraits and testimonies from grieving mothers, Khader humanises the victims of violence. The exhibit draws on his personal ties to Palestine and his vow to show the world what mainstream media overlooked. He honours 235 journalists killed, inscribing their names on a burial cloth placed at the entrance. Khader’s work is raw, emotional, and intentionally unsettling. The show runs until May 14.
Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reports from the exhibition in Amsterdam.
