Gabon votes in first election since 2023 coup, military leader now frontrunner

Gabon is holding its first presidential election since the 2023 military coup that ended over 50 years of Bongo-family dominance. General Brice Oligui Nguema, who led the coup and has since served as interim president, had pledged a return to civilian rule. However, he is now a candidate himself—and the frontrunner.
