Colombia’s Medellin combats rising heat with green corridors as a model for sustainable cities

In Colombia’s city of Medellin, green corridors filled with trees and plants are helping cool the urban environment. Launched in 2016, the project has reduced temperatures by up to 2°C in key areas and helped trap pollution. Gardeners maintain the network daily, while residents praise the greener, safer and more walkable neighbourhoods. Wildlife has also returned, reconnecting the city with nature. Forest engineers continue testing which species bring the most benefits. The scheme has received international praise. Medellin’s model offers a low-cost, sustainable solution for cities worldwide.
