Black smoke from Sistine Chapel meaning pope not elected yet | BBC News
Thick black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney on Wednesday evening, signalling that the cardinals meeting in the conclave did not decide on a new pope.
Thousands of people gathered in St Peter's Square in the Vatican to wait for the result of the first vote, which lasted about three hours.
The 133 cardinals will retire overnight and resume their deliberations tomorrow.
