Israel releases nine Palestinians amid fresh Gaza strikes and reports of torture by freed detainees
Israel has released nine more Palestinian detainees arrested after October 7, following last week's release of 11 prisoners. The men, aged 30-60, were transferred via the Red Cross to Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir el-Balah where they reported torture and severe dehydration. This comes amid continued Israeli military operations, including drone strikes on civilians collecting flour in Gaza City's Shujayea neighbourhood. Simultaneously, the Israeli army is conducting controlled explosions in Rafah to expand a buffer zone. Hospital staff are conducting medical evaluations on the freed detainees who appeared visibly exhausted. The releases occur against a backdrop of escalating violence across Gaza. Palestinian authorities are demanding the liberation of more prisoners still held in Israeli jails.
Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum reports from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza.
